It’s better to spend wisely than cut blindly!

This advice was offered by Gavin Poole executive director of the Centre for Social Justice to the Government through the pages of the Sunday Times this weekend. The short article on the Government simply cutting social / welfare budgets read well and for me made a lot of sense. I then thought it could equally be applied to businesses. If we focus on schemes that increase our sales we will surely grow despite the current economic climate.

The article made three points: be specific about the required outcomes, make sure everyone was involved and that they received recognition for their input and ensure that output was measured to gauge improvement.

In business terms this means:

  • have a sales plan that is specific, measurable, achievable, realistic with defined timescales
  • get the whole business involved in sales
  • get evidence-based value for money from your sales and marketing budget by measuring the outcomes

Gavin Poole promised two major outcomes if the cultural change required in public spending was achieved: value for money and breathtaking social reform of our society.

I can also guarantee the following return on adopting the business model outlined above:

  • financial growth through more sales
  • increased profitability without a major increase in marketing spend
  • breathtaking adoption by your staff
